47 Jersey Shore beaches face possible closure

TRENTON -?Last weekend's heavy rains have put?a lot more than three dozen beaches near closing.

Daily testing on the water under control, ocean, and river beaches go back with elevated bacteria levels all down the Jersey Shore. The second similar test result will force beaches to remain closed.

Samples producing enterococcus volume exceeding the state of hawaii standard of 104 colonies per 100 milliliters trigger a swim advisory and a second number of tests. Closures are enacted when two consecutive samples register levels exceeding state standards, by order from the Department of Environmental Protection.

New Jersey, through its Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program, has among the list of nation’s most rigorous water monitoring programs, and beach advisories and closings are rare, according to the DEP.

Enterococcus is really a bacteria within human and animal waste. Their state standard is a borderline from which extended exposure presents threat.
